Obituary of John E. McGurrin

JOHN EDWARD McGURRIN of New Windsor departed this life on May 23rd at the age of ninety-seven years and eleven months. Born in Brooklyn to Hugh and Theresa (Carrig) McGurin on June 22, 1925, John joined the United States Navy when he turned eighteen. He saw combat in the Pacific as a landing craft coxswain aboard the U.S.S. DuPage, including at Guadalcanal and the Philippines. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with two stars and the World War Two Victory Medal. After his Honorable Discharge in 1947 he married Roberta Ida Hartmann of New Milford, New Jersey, and they moved to Monsey, New York. He was employed at Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, where he worked his way up to supervisor before his retirement. He and Roberta, an executive at Citibank, later lived in Bonita Springs, Florida, Houston, Texas, and Argyle, New York, before settling at Plum Point in the Hudson Valley in 2000. A proud Irishman, John will be remembered for his mischievous sense of humor and a smile that lit up a room. He was a Mets fan and enjoyed collecting baseball caps. He is predeceased by his parents and his younger siblings Mary and Hugh, Jr. Roberta was called home in 2015, and John later married his beloved helpmate Toni (Bishop) McGurrin. Along with Toni, “Uncle John” is survived by numerous nephews and nieces, their spouses and children, and his many friends from Church. A funeral service will be conducted by Bishop A. R. Hibbert, Sr. on Thursday, June 1, at 11 AM at the Penuel Pentecostal Tabernacle at 12 Winona Avenue in Newburgh. Burial will be at Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Goshen, New York. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Anthony V. Cracolici of the Hudson Valley Funeral Home Inc.
