Obituary of Jacob Gruberg

Jacob (Jack) Gruberg, age 103, long time resident of Poughkeepsie, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2024 at home in Poughkeepsie, NY, surrounded by his family. Jack was born on June 16, 1920 in Kingston, New York. He married the love of his life, Evelyn Dabrusin, on November 2, 1947, who predeceased him in July 2011. He was also predeceased by his parents Joseph and Sarah Gruberg, his brothers Cy Gruberg and Gerald Gruberg, and his sister Frieda Weinstein.
Jack served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He owned Johnny’s Bar & Grill on Broadway in Newburgh in the early 1950s. After that, he went into the family business, Ulster Electric Supply Company, where he opened a branch in Poughkeepsie that he ran until his retirement in 1985. Jack was an active member of Congregation Agudas Israel in Newburgh, NY, serving on the Board of Directors and as Vice President. He was also a member of the Harding Club of Poughkeepsie, NY, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Jewish War Veterans. He was an active participant at Golds Gym LaGrange until age 100 when Covid-19 struck. Jack was known for his generosity, great sense of humor and his kindness.
Jack is survived by his children: Stephen Gruberg of Poughkeepise and Robin Licker (Steven) of Poughkeepsie; his grandchildren Stephen Gruberg (Yolie) of Florida, David Gruberg (Caitlin) of Florida, Michael Licker (Rachael) of Boston, Glenn Licker (Nina) of Rockville, MD and Marcie Licker of Elkridge, MD.; his great grandchildren Cora Gruberg, Kaia Gruberg, Eli and Jake Licker, Mollie and Anna Licker.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at 11:00am at Congregation Agudas Israel, 290 North Street, Newburgh, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hudson Valley Hospice, 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 and Congregation Agudas Israel, 290 North Street, Newburgh, NY 12550.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Hudson Valley Funeral Home.
