Please share a memory of Salvatore to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Salvatore (Sal/Sonny) Mondello of Newburgh, a loving father and grandpa, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024 at St. Luke’s Hospital, after a short illness. Salvatore was born in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania on February 21, 1939 to Joseph and Pasqualina (Guariglia) Mondello. He was 85 years old.
Sal served in the United States Navy from 1962-1964 on the USS Randolph (CVS 15). He was part of the naval blockade, a ring of ships, around Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October of 1962. Salvatore was a retired police officer of the NYPD in the Bronx (precincts 47 and 52). After retiring, he served as the director of security for Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. Sal was a hard worker and after retiring the second time, he worked at the Newburgh Auto Auction and Enterprise Rent-A-Car as a driver. Sal was a lifelong learner and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and an MBA from Mount Saint Mary College. At the time of his death, he was learning to speak Italian and Chinese. He had a sharp memory and intelligence until his final days. Sal was very active, receiving his Black Belt in karate in 1992, and was lucky enough to receive boxing lessons from Floyd Patterson. Later in his life, Sal would remain active by taking walks with his beloved dog, Kali. He was a very big Yankees fan, and shared that love with his family. He took immense pride in his Italian heritage. Remembered for his kindness, he had a good-natured, jovial personality, and made a litany of friends throughout his life. Sal was the definition of a true family man and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Sal is survived by his children: Gina (Michael) Caraway of Marlboro, Diana (Jack) Holloran of St. Remy, Paula Bugbee of Marlboro, Nancy Mondello of Newburgh, Edward (Samantha) Murray of Florida; 13 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; his sister Paula (Lou) Meyer of Tennessee; ex-wife and mother of his children Diana Consorti and many nieces and nephews.
