Obituary of Charles D. Aranda

Charles David Aranda of Newburgh, New York passed away peacefully on November 8, 2024 at home in the presence of his family after a courageous battle with cancer after having been initially diagnosed with cancer more than 10 years ago. He was the eldest of three sons born in Manhattan on June 26, 1939 to his parents, Carlos and Marie Aranda both of whom predeceased him. He is survived at home by his loving wife, Johanna Aranda who he married on May 12, 1962. They spent over 60 years raising their family together. First in Manhattan and then moving to Newburgh in the early 1970’s where they permanently made their home. He is also survived by his two daughters: Karen Aranda Hermida and her husband, Ralph Hermida of Newburgh, Annette Ingrassia and her husband , John Ingrassia of Pine Bush as well as his beloved five grandchildren , Brendon Hermida and his fiancé Syra Castillo, Shelby Ingrassia Beresovoy and her husband, Nate Beresovoy, Madison Hermida, Chloe Ingrassia, and Landon Hermida as well as his beloved great granddaughter Collins Beresovoy. He is also survived by his two brothers Henry Aranda of Ocala, Florida, and Richard Aranda of Queens, New York. Several cousins also survive him. Charlie was raised on the lower west side of Manhattan where he enjoyed a fun childhood with numerous childhood friends who all remained friends throughout their lives. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and thereafter he honorably served our country as a member of the United States Army from 1958 until 1960. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he enjoyed a long and rewarding career in the international cargo logistics and transportation industry. He ultimately ended his career at OOCL next to the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. It was while working at that location that he contracted cancer after the Terrorists attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 Charlie was a gifted craftsman who could complete almost any home renovation project and he had a unique talent of being able to repair most any household item. He was also a very talented gardener and took great pride in his vegetable garden which yielded a multitude of vegetables every year and were enjoyed by his family and his friends. He was knowledgeable on many topics and enjoyed history and sports, particularly baseball and was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. He was also a gifted storyteller. He would routinely share stories about his life and about little known historical facts to his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards and could solve any crossword puzzle put before him. Until his illness advanced he also loved to travel and did so frequently with his wife and their friends as well as with his family. Charlie was a man who was guided by two principles: his faith and his family. The greatest joy in his life was his family. From family gatherings on holidays to summer barbecues to attending sporting events, musicals, and dance recitals for his grandchildren, Charlie was always present being their biggest fan. After falling ill, all of us fortunate enough to have known him witnessed firsthand his remarkable determination and fortitude which were teaching moments for all of us to always continue to fight no matter what obstacles one may face. All of us who were blessed to have known him are better people for that experience. He will be missed for the man that he was, and we will be forever grateful for his life. His family will receive visitors at Hudson Valley Funeral Home located at 239 Quassaick Avenue New Windsor, NY 12553 on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 from 4 PM until 7 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Saint Mother Teresa Calcutta Church, 25 Robinson Ave., Newburgh, NY 12550 on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at 10 AM Interment will immediately follow at the Orange County Veteran’s Cemetary 111 Craigville Rd., Goshen, NY 10924 The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Charlie’s memory to either Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital stjude.org or to the Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW.org
