Hyman Slavin passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 13, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of George and Libbie Slavin. Hyman was the Postmaster of Newburgh, NY from 1972 until his retirement in 1986.
Hyman was born in the Bronx and grew up in Newburgh. He graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in January 1944 and subsequently entered the U.S. Army and went on to serve in World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned his Associate’s Degree from Albany Business College and then began working for the U.S. Postal Service in Newburgh.
Hyman was very involved with his synagogue, Congregation Agudas Israel, for many years, serving as President from 1982-1984. He was also involved with NARFE, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, when he lived in Newburgh, as well as Delray Beach.
Hyman is survived by his wife of 61 years, Renee, his daughter Helene of Rockville, MD, his son Harold (his wife Rebecca) of Orlando, FL, and grandson Brian. He is also survived by his brother, Charles (his wife Gale), several nieces and nephews, and many cousins.
Services will be held on Thursday, November 18 at 11:00am at Congregation Agudas Israel, 290 North Street, Newburgh, NY. Masks and vaccinations are required to attend the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Congregation Agudas Israel or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the care of Hudson Valley Funeral Home.
